JOHN & YVETTE ARVIZU’S 1964 GTO
I grew up on Chevys. I remember my Dad always
having one as a family car. Our family went from owning a'49 Chevy when I was a
rug rat to getting a new, shiny '54 post Bel Aire. When I was getting into my
teenage years we got a ‘58 Chevy. Since this was the car I was going to learn
to drive, my Dad made sure that it had only the six and not the V-8 that I was
hoping for. I still couldn't wait until the weekends when my Dad would hand me
the keys and write down the mileage, so he
would know how much driving I did on my weekend excursions. When I went away to
college he got a ‘64 Impala with a V-8 and later a ‘65 El Camino. I was
raised on Chevys and have owned a few myself.
It wasn't until one day that I was perusing the
classifieds and looking for a new Chevy to purchase when
I saw an ad for a ‘70 GTO just a few miles away from home. I decided to stop
by after work to take a look at it. The owner was home and agreed to let me
drive it. Since I already owned a 72 SS454 El Camino, I thought this would be a
nice compliment to the stable. Now my SS454 was no slouch but this GTO felt like
it would run circles around my beloved Chevy. I had to have it! Especially when
the owner only wanted $3800 for it! At that moment I became a GTO fan. That car
has become my driver and I have done everything to it. The car is flat out fun
to drive! Since then I have bought a beautiful and already done ‘64 GTO silver
mist convertible with the stock 389.
Since buying it, I have added tri-power and I am
getting ready to add a PST suspension rebuild kit to it. My wife and I love
cruising in it with the top down and the tunes playing. I feel like I could be
back in high school! I still love old Chevys but the
GTO has made me a true believer.
